dilemma will be a potentially devastating problem.
Yes it is a huge worry.for those with opened eyes.
We have the mercurial ADRIAN but if he gets injured or has a loss of confidence.we really have no one who is confident.competent or able and experienced enough to get the custodians gloves.
We have SPEIGEL and RANDOLPH who really do not cut the mustard.
we have young HOWES and possibly the 19 year old highly rated Montenegro goalie who are both in need of developing.

What to do.we need to either loan out SPEIGEL and RANDOLPH.
And bring in Guzan who is still available for 4 mill. And either Bentley or Zelenika to cover this terribly vulnerable situation.
It is obvious that before long we will need another goalie.
I am a big fan of ADRIAN but West Ham need more goalies in the first team squad.

We only want top grade goalkeepers at West ham
No definately no bench sitters

Re: dilemma will be a potentially devastating problem.
Guzan isn't going to come to WHU to sit on the bench. Likewise Adrian isn't going to stay at WHU sitting on the bench if Guzan became number 1. If that happens you still have the same problem. Adrian is a very decent keeper with the potential to be a very very decent one if he cuts out the showboating that got him into trouble against Southampton.

Also it's 3 million quid probably better used elsewhere at the moment.

Re: dilemma will be a potentially devastating problem.
Has anyone actually seen that much of Randolph to know whether or not he is a good enough understudy?

I know Birmingham were crap, but he was at least their No.1 and the championship isn't that bad a league.

Joey.
I believe that they would be great for each other.
In a match day squad of 18

BILIC and WOODS would not chose from anything else but the clubs best interests.

We can get Bentley this week for 1 mill

Re: dilemma will be a potentially devastating problem.
Good thread, Hugh, some important questions raised.

Do you think a goal-defender such as Guzan would be happy to join us given we have the excellent shot-stopper in Adrian who he would have to work very hard to replace in the 1st XI?

Hugh Monteith 11:48 Thu Jul 30
Re: dilemma will be a potentially devastating problem.
We could have got Guzan for 3mill last week.

Re: dilemma will be a potentially devastating problem.
All players get injured or sick or even have a loss of form and or confidence.
Yes even goalies that is one of the reasons our match day squad has two keepers.

Re: dilemma will be a potentially devastating problem.
I reckon Adrian's performances last season gives him the opportunity again to prove himself as our number one.

I don't think there was any real need to go out and spend £8m quid and £75k a week on wages on bringing Bergovic to the club.

Re: dilemma will be a potentially devastating problem.
It has been as clear as day for the past two seasons that Jussi had to go and that Adrian needed more competition. He was one of the worse goalkeepers I have ever seen on free kicks and penalties, plus he wasn't commanding and couldn't put his foot through a ball properly.
He obviously ended up just waiting for his contract to end.

In most transfers, my view has always been that you replace your worst players with players who are better than your best players. So in Adrian's case, I would have sold Jussi and gone all out for Begovic who is arguably a better keeper than Adrian or at a similar level.

Buying a player to compete for another players position when he clearly isn't as good is just a waste of time. The only way this works is if you are buying a young player for the future like a Samuelson or Poyet who have the potential to develop into a better player than you already have.

Another example would be with Sakho and Carroll. With Carroll injured we clearly need another forward. So you don't go with Lambert (who we have been linked with) who is clearly not as good as Sakho or a fit Carroll. You have to go with an Austin who again is arguably as good or better than your best forwards.

I know some will say that we can't afford to do this and it is unrealistic etc but I hear the Chairmen talking us up for a top 8th place and that we have money to creep up behind the top 5 and that moving to the new stadium is a 'game changer' etc. But you can't do that unless you fill your squad up with quality players.

All this talk needs to be transferred into ambition in the transfer market and so far, other than Payet and Ogbonna which has been a good start in this window, we are filling our squad with unknowns and cheap options. We have lost Downing and signed Lanzini. We have lost Song and signed Obiang. We have lost Carlton Cole and are flirting with Maiga again. Let's hope we see an Austin and two or three more signings of the Payet and Ogbonna mould, otherwise you can kiss goodbye to a top half finish and the talk of creeping up on the top 5 is just fantasy.

Nothing frustrates me more when I see us going for the cheap option. Randolph is clearly inferior to Adrian, but he is here now and we certainly aren't going to buy a 3rd goalkeeper. So this thread is a bit late in the day.

Boredom is a self afflicted condition.

Guzan would be a first team squad goalie.and Bentley could be loaned out if he needed to be.

Re: dilemma will be a potentially devastating problem.
Very few teams have the luxury of a reserve keeper they would be happy with playing for long periods of time should the number 1 get injured. Goalkeepers rarely get injured though, so it's not a huge issue. At least Ruud bloody Boffin isn't our back up any more. By God he was fucking woeful.

I think the position of number 2 goalkeeper is a tricky one to fill, Hughers.
GUZAN wouldn't be interested, and I don't imagine Bentley would want his career stagnating at this point either.

Re: dilemma will be a potentially devastating problem.
As I said earlier we could still get Guzan and Bentley for under 8 mill
